Suicide Survivors Come Together To Heal

The holidays are usually a time of joy and togetherness. For some it can be a time of depression and painful memories.

That's why for the past 14 years, the Thursday before Thanksgiving has been National Survivors of Suicide Day.

On Saturday, the Staunton-based Survivors of Suicide Support Group took part in a national teleconference meant to be a forum to talk about their loss.

Recent survivors of suicide often have to deal with not only their own questions but also the questions of those around them. The meeting offered a way to bond with other survivors which some believe is the best way to help themselves heal.

"I can talk with people who died of cancer, car accidents," said Sean McGowan, whose son took his own life. "There's still the stigma associated with suicide that makes that grieving different than others. When you come together in a group of people like this, the healing is more profound because you share it with people with the same loss."

If you have lost a loved one to suicide and need help ,the Staunton Survivors group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at the Christ Lutheran Church (2807 N. Augusta St.). You can also call (540) 383-2902.
